For example, if you open an attachment in a spam email and it downloads remote control and keystroke recording software to your computer. Then if you do things like online banking, you are vulnerable to crimes like identity theft.


Some ways to keep yourself safe from harmful emails is to assume that messages from people that are not in your address book are spam.

When dealing with web site memberships, three things can happen: a hacker can break into the site and steal email addresses, your email address could be leaked to the web due to browser bugs on the web site or your email address can be sold to spammers. These things will compromise your email security.

Do not use your primary email address to sign up for anything. Using your primary email address to sign up for web site memberships can put you at risk of receiving harmful spam emails and hacking.

If your email account is hacked into, the hacker will have access to your personal contact information and those of the people in your address book. With access to your contact and most likely billing information, a hacker can steal your identity, or sell your personal information to others.

Instead of using your primary email address to sign up for web site memberships, use a disposable email address like one from a free web-based email service.

You can also use a secondary email address that is not used for any serious personal or business contact. Maintaining email security will help maintain the security of your computer.
